You will rarely see anything more adorable and appealing than Vizsla puppies. They all have that gorgeous brown Vizsla coat, big puppy eyes, and kissable wrinkly faces. How can you resist taking one home? Adding a dog to your family is a commitment for the lifetime of that animal and – as with any purebred dog -– you should definitely do your research before committing to adopting or purchasing a Vizsla. Here are some tips to help you know if the breed is right for you, and how to locate a reliable Vizsla breeder.
Vizslas are a very active breed and need a large quantity of strenuous exercise every day. A dog that is not adequately exercised can get bored and destructive. You must be able to commit to long daily walks or runs, or have a large fenced area where the dog can run. Vizslas can spend warm nights outdoors, but should definitely sleep inside during cold weather. They are very affectionate dogs – sometimes described as “velcro dogs” –- so you should be willing to do a lot of snuggling. Furthermore, Vizsla puppies who are well-socialized often do well with other pets and children.
When you are looking for Vizsla puppies, you should research breeders to make sure that they breed healthy dogs. You should always ask to see the parents of any puppy you want to take home, and a responsible breeder should have no problem with you coming to visit and inspect their kennel and meet their dogs. Make sure you ask the ages of the parents; sires should be over 18 months old, and dams should be between two years and three months to eight years old.
Most Vizsla breeders are working hard to keep hip dysplasia out of the breed, so any breeder should have their dogs tested and should be willing to show you the hip scores of the sire and dam of any litter. If you are in the United States, you can check with the Vizsla Club of America for a list of breeders in good standing.
With a little research and pre-planning, you are sure to find the perfect Vizsla puppy for you and/or your family!
