Goldens originated in Scotland in the 1860s, where they were superior hunting dogs at the Lord Tweedmouth estate. Lord Tweedmouth owned a Yellow Retriever and began a breeding program with a Tweed Water Spaniel. Today’s Golden Retrievers are descended from Lord Tweedmouth’s dogs. The first Goldens were registered with the British Kennel Club in 1903 and the American Kennel Club in 1925.
