If you are thinking about expanding your family by adding a furry four legged friend, you might want to consider Vizslas! These canines are excellent dogs, and there are many things to think about before getting one since they are such a unique breed. Some of these things includes the fact that this type of dog is a family dog, they have lots of energy, and they are incredibly smart.
Vizslas Are (Very) Active
First, you need to remember that these dogs are very active. Vizslas require a lot of high-energy activity to be well adjusted to life in your home. It is not enough for a Vizsla to just have a small yard to run around in — he will need to interact with you and take longer walks or runs. If you have a Vizsla, and he begins to exhibit destructive behavior, he might just be bored. Taking him out more frequently to expend that excess Vizsla energy may be the solution.
Indoor Family Dogs
Second, keep in mind that Vizslas are definitely family dogs. In other words, a Vizsla might not be for you if you plan to keep him or her in a kennel outdoors for most of its life. Furthermore, Vizslas will be extremely loyal to you and your family. Many people get dogs and then forget, or do not realize, that dogs are pack animals — they were originally bred in packs, and they are instinctively pack animals. This means that most dog breeds, Vizslas especially, are intensely loyal to what they see as their pack, or you as their family.
Highly Intelligent Dogs
Third, this breed of dog is incredibly smart. Therefore, they need to be trained well from a very young age. At a minimum, you should plan to enroll your Vizslas in an eight to ten week puppy obedience course; thus, you will also want to start early with crate and basic house training procedures. However, once you have the training down, and are willing to put in the time and effort required, you will find that Vizslas are very eager to please and learn quickly.
